Why Burnout Is Not Your Fault

The mathematics of operational stress proves burnout is structural failure, not personal weakness.

The Burnout Equation

Burnout occurs when σ(t) > ℒ(role)

In Intent Tensor Theory, σ (sigma) represents irreducible residue—the accumulated memory of misalignment between what you are asked to do and what you are able to do. It is not stress. It is not tiredness. It is the mathematical trace of impossible demands.

ℒ (Lock) is your capacity to absorb σ without reconfiguration. Different people have different Lock values. Different roles demand different Lock thresholds. When σ exceeds ℒ, the system fails. That failure is burnout.

This is why burnout is not your fault. If the role generates σ faster than any human ℒ can absorb, the role is broken—not you. The math does not lie.

The Implication
Organizations that blame employees for burnout are committing a category error. They are treating a field equation failure as a particle problem.
The solution is not “resilience training.” The solution is reducing σ generation at the source: clearer intent, better alignment, honest resource allocation. Fix the field, not the person standing in it.
